The Athan Software (for Windows)

The Athan Software reminds users of the five daily Islamic calls to prayer. Although the program is nicely designed, it has some functional problems that made it difficult to use.

The program's interface is intuitive, with its functions arranged neatly with buttons. We had no trouble figuring out how to configure the program; everything was quite obvious. The program's built-in Help file gives a clear explanation of its features, but unfortunately, it offered no troubleshooting tips for when things don't go as planned.

The problem that we encountered was with defining our location. The program has a list of major cities, but our city wasn't listed, so we clicked the built-in Google Maps button. This seemed like a great feature that would allow us to find our city and enter the latitude and longitude automatically. Unfortunately, the program wouldn't recognize the location that we selected. Attempts to enter our latitude and longitude manually resulted in error messages.

When users are able to configure their location properly, the program is lovely, playing high-quality audio of each athan anywhere from 1 to 9 minutes before the prayer time; users can select when they want to the athan to play. It's also easy to turn to the audio on and off and upload different audio files if desired.

The Athan Software is free, and it installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program with reservations; it's great when it works, but users who do not live in major cities will be unable to enter their exact locations and get accurate prayer times.
